I have a couple of favorite ways to teach this skill, but there are many ways you can teach it, so feel free to come into the community with your thoughts and ideas, and let's make a training plan! 

Prerequisite behavior: a nice loop of eating food from hand - offered focus - eat food from hand - offered focus. Because we are using offered focus to tell if our dogs are ready for the next rep or not, they need to be able to reset to offered focus after eating. If you've made it to step 4 of Standby, you're good! 
What also helps is default eye contact when your hand is on their collar/leash. 

If they do have offered eye contact, and an “eat from hand” marker, you’re good to start “dish” training. Here are the steps of the first session.

1. Dog on leash, leash remains in your hand the whole time. 
2. Hold dog’s collar 
3. Load bowl 
4. Wait for focus/offered eye contact 
5. Mark “yep” (food from hand cue) and feed as you move away from bowl (you can let go of their collar and just hold the leash now) 
6. Mark “yep” several times for focus/offered eye contact 
7. If the offered eye contact loop is clean, then mark one of the eye contacts with “dish”, and then move together with the dog to the dish. 

Additional steps for training this skill: 

In the first session or two, you are mostly luring the dog away from the bowl. Future progressions are: 
1. Reduce the amount of food from hand you're feeding before sending them back to the dish. In a 4-5 rep session, you should eventually only be rewarding from the dish. 

2. Next step is to not hold the leash and begin at step 2 of the initial training instructions. Increase food rewards from your hand to maintain success. 

3. If you've made it back to 5 reps of only rewarding at the dish, remove the leash entirely. Increase food rewards from your hand to maintain success. 

4. If you've made it back to 5 reps of rewarding only with the dish, then you're ready to add simple, well-known behaviors after moving away from the dish and before cueing the dish. 

Note: I have other options for teaching this behavior if your dog is not ok with being handled by the collar like these instructions outline - just let me know!
